Safari Overview

This 6 days will take you to the Gorilla haven in the Volcanoes National Park to trek Mountain Gorillas. It will enable you to discover and enjoy the scenic beauty of the volcanic landscapes characteristic of this part of the country, provide an opportunity to track the chimpanzees and to have a canopy walk on top of Nyungwe forest  where your guts to withstand heights will be tested. You will also have a day at Lake Kivu and visit the prominent memorial sites of the tragic genocide of 1994 in Rwanda during a short city tour in Kigali.

Day 1Transfer to Nyungwe via Butare, visit the Kings Palace in Nyanza and Rwanda National Museum

Our driver guide will pick you from your hotel or airport and transfer you to Nyungwe National park. You will begin your journey to Nyungwe Forest following the southern route. You will have lunch en-route and your way you will visit the Butare Museum, and Nyanza King’s Palace. After which you will continue to the park.
You will check in at the lodge and have a relaxed evening.

Day 2Chimpanzee trekking and Canopy walk

You will have an early breakfast and report to the Park headquarters for a briefing on Chimpanzee tracking rules. You will then start the trek in the forest with the guides to find the chimpanzees. After the trek you will go for the famous Nyungwe Forest Canopy walk. The canopy walkway is suspended 50 meters in the air between big trees and stretches over a steep and deep valley across a massive forest cover offering breathtaking views across the misty forest.
You will have sightings at eye-level of a number of unique wildlife inhabiting the canopies including birds, butterflies, and several monkey species. After return to the lodge check out and transfer to Lake Kivu.

Day 3Full day relaxation at Lake Kivu

After your breakfast, have a morning out of the lodge and you have a range of activities to engage in and get your day going. Lake Kivu waters have waves that support water sports activities like windsurfing, kayaking, speedboat rides and sport fishing, swimming, hiking and biking along the shore from which you will choose. In the evening, you will visit a few attractions in the nearby towns of Kibuye and Gisenyi. You will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4Transfer to Volcanoes national park and cultural visit

Wake up early in the morning, have breakfast and drive to Volcanoes National park. On reaching the park, check-in at your lodge for lunch and relaxation.
After lunch, take a cultural walk to Iby’iwachu Cultural Village-a Non-Profit umbrella organization that aims at improving the lives of reformed poachers and communities around Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park through provision of conservation incentives, supporting community enterprise development and livelihood-based projects. It is a rewarding place where you will be guided around the place as you enjoy the Kinyarwanda traditions including the Intore dance, traditional ceremonies and a guided community walk. You will after return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5Gorilla trekking and transfer to Kigali

You will have an early breakfast and join other tourists at the Kinigi Park headquarters at 08:00am for a briefing on the Gorilla tracking rules. You will be allocated a Gorilla group to track and guides to lead you to the Gorillas. The trekking is a strenuous exercise through thick jungle on steep terrain that is uneven, wet and often muddy for as many as 2-5 hours, depending on the location of the Gorillas.
Once sighted, you will spend a maximum of one hour with the Gorillas watching them as they feed, play, communicate and bond with their young. You will return to the lodge for lunch and some rest. You will then drive to Kigali City for overnight the late afternoon.

Day 6Short City tour and departure

Have breakfast at leisure and later you will have a city tour where you will visit the Genocide memorial grounds, local markets, museum, craft shops, do some shopping and later transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
